When you consider the cost of converting the loft you need to look at the cost of renting out an office and the cost of commuting each day. You then need to consider how long it will take before you spend the cost of the conversion on the rented office and other associated costs.

Don’t forget that when you convert your attic you will be adding value to your property so some or all of the money you spend will be coming back to you whereas renting an office is money spent for good.


DO I NEED PLANNING PERMISSION FOR A LOFT CONVERSION?

The good news is that planning permission is not normally required for loft conversions. However, permission is required where you extend or alter the roof space and it exceeds specified limits and conditions.

Under new regulations that came into effect from 1 October 2008 a loft conversion for your house is considered to be permitted development, not requiring an application for planning permission, subject to the following limits and conditions:

 

DO I NEED BUILDING APPROVAL FOR A LOFT CONVERSION?

The Building Regulations are made under powers provided in the Building Act 1984, and apply in England and Wales. The current edition of the regulations is ‘The Building Regulations 2000’ (as amended) and the majority of building projects are required to comply with them.

LOFT CONVERSION IDEASThey exist to ensure the health and safety of people in and around all types of buildings (i.e. domestic, commercial and industrial). They also provide for energy conservation, and access to and use of buildings.
